Aside from hiring a car on Great Barrier Island another option for exploring the island is by private transfer or using the scheduled bus service that operates on the island.
Great Barrier Travel has a travel pass that offers unlimited use of their scheduled services for the duration of your stay on the island. All travel passes include wharf or airport transfers and unlimited use of all the scheduled services.
Scheduled bus services Great Barrier Travel bus services operate a number of scheduled services on the island. These give access to all the "hot spots" on the island including beaches, tramping trails and Kaitoke geothermal hot springs. As all the attractions require getting out and about the service has been designed to drop you off and pick you up later at a pre-arranged time.
Departure and arrival times for scheduled bus service:
 Depart Tryphena 9.40am – Claris 10am – Arrive Port Fitzroy 10.55am
Depart Port Fitzroy 11am – Claris 12pm – Arrive Tryphena 12.20am
Island tour Stay on the bus service all day and you’ll be provided a tour of the island with your driver providing you commentary enroute.
