Renting a car on Great Barrier Island can be a bit different so here are a few of the things to consider before you embark on your journey.

Fuel on the island generally costs over $2 a litre so if you burn a tank of fuel in a day it will cost more than hiring the car.

Check the fuel stations for opening hours as the hours change during the winter and the summer. 

Many of the roads are un-sealed.

Allow extra time for your journey because most of the roads are single lane with few passing places. Make sure you have a plan for the possibility of a breakdown or puncture.  It can take some time to get assistance.

The Small Print
Insurance excess: is $3200. All drivers must have a current license and payment is by credit card.

The Quality Service
To accommodate the unique experience of driving on Great Barrier Island Aotea Rentals have come up with the following;

Our partnership with Great Barrier Buses means that you can use any of their services at any time when you have hired a rental car.  This lessens the problems that may occur if you have a breakdown, puncture etc.

Also provided are transfers to and from the island for all our clients so you can reduce your car hire costs by two days if you arrive Friday, hire a car on Saturday and return it early on Sunday.  This costs only one day car hire with Aotea.

You take the car and leave it for collection at any location on the island.
